Great Taste Cycle Trail Tasman
Join a Scenic Cycle Tours group and experience the Nelson Tasman Great Taste Cycle Trail, enjoy an Abel Tasman boat ride with time to explore the special attractions of this region and meet some of the locals who call this fabulous part of NZ home.
Treat yourself, family and friends to a 5 day guided tour by bike through magnificent scenery with plenty of stops to enjoy the regions fabulous cuisine. The trail includes local restaurants, BBQ meals, home-made chocolates, salmon fishing, ferry rides and plenty of cycling. On each leg of the tour you will find fabulous stops to quench your thirst and satisfy your appetite, celebrating all the great food and drink that the Nelson - Tasman region has to offer.
You will need a moderate level of fitness to enjoy the Great Taste Cycle Ride and have some off-road experience cycling on shingle surfaces.
Approx. 21km ride
Pickup from Nelson around mid-day, we will stop for lunch at Riverside Cafe in the heart of the Tasman district, (cost is additional to the tour package). Enjoy the drive over the Takaka Hill and then bike from Uruwhenua on the central Takaka road to our Motel accommodation. Take a stroll along the beach, or try out the local cycleway, before having dinner at a local restaurant.

Bus to the start of the Heaphy Track, this is where you will start your cycling for the day. Cycle to the famous Bainham Store for morning tea. The store has been in the same family for four generations, since it opened in 1928. Enjoy spending time looking at the well stocked shelves and collection of fine china, enjoy an espresso coffee or a pot of tea. On the way visit Salisbury Bridge site made famous as a film location for the Lord Of The Rings movie. Gently cycle through the lush green river valley, past the Kahurangi National Park and the Whakamarama mountain range overlooking the Kaituna River, before arriving at the Courthouse Cafe in Collingwood. After lunch we visit The Chocolate Shop for your home made sweet treats. Take time out to explore Collingwood before cycling to your accommodation overlooking Collingwood for the next two nights stay. Enjoy a BBQ meal tonight with your group prepared by your guide. Approx. 35-50km ride
Drive to Kaihoka Lakes where we will meet the farm owners who will show us where an old Hudson bomber crashed and hear about the history and chat about farming life with them. After lunch bike to Whararika Beach at the very top of the South Island for a spectacular beach walk, before cycling back to Collingwood. Tonight's dinner is at a local restaurant.
Approx. 15-38km ride
Drive to Waikoropupu (Pupu) Springs to see for yourself the clearest spring water in the world. Enjoy the bush walk around the springs and read about the unique features of this special place. Then cycle through Takaka to the Anatoki River to do some salmon fishing (you can pay to have your catch smoked to take home and enjoy later). After lunch either cycle to Pohara or take a seat on the bus and then enjoy an afternoon cycling around the bays or exploring the grove bush walk. Dinner at a local beach restaurant.
Approx. 15-45km ride
Enjoy an Abel Tasman boat trip from Totaranui to Kaiteriteri Beach, where you can cycle from Kaiteriteri to Riwaka then bus to Mapua for lunch by the waterside. Catch the ferry to Rabbit Island then cycle back to Nelson along the Great Taste Cycleway. You may like to stay the night in Nelson or be transferred to the airport for a flight home. The ideal check in time would be 6.30pm for a 7pm or later flight.
Tours operate on set departure dates. However for groups of six or more people we can look at additional tour dates.
If you are bringing your own bike and helmet, make sure it is in good condition, been recently serviced and you have a spare inner tube.
Degree of Difficulty
You will need a moderate level of fitness with some off road experience biking on shingle surfaces. Biking is grades 1-2 with optional grade 3 biking for those who want it. We look forward to you joining us on the Tasman Great Taste Trail.
