Molesworth & Spooners Tunnel Cycle Tour
Scenic Cycle Tours gives you the unique opportunity to experience biking the best parts of the Awatere Valley and Molesworth Station in the beautiful Marlborough high country. Our 4 day Molesworth & Spooners Tunnel Cycle Tour will take you through the Maruia Trail native bush and off-road cycling to stay at Nelson Lakes and experience cycling through the Spooners Tunnel. At 1.35km, it is the longest tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere used exclusively by cyclists and walkers. Enjoy meeting local farmers, great meals and comfortable accommodation.
Approx. 25km cycle ride
Between 8.00 and 8.30am pickup from accommodation in Blenheim, a short briefing and introductions. Your biking starts 20kms south of Blenheim at the start of the Awatere Valley Road. Bike 8kms then rest with refreshments and our famous Biker Biscuits, bike another 17kms, before taking a relaxing ride to the high country station where we will have lunch with the owners. Enjoy another ride further up the valley then cycle 9kms to your overnight farm accommodation nestled in the Awatere Valley arriving about 5.00pm. A hot shower, a few drinks and off for a traditional roast meal at the homestead. L.D
Approx. 49km cycle ride
After a filling breakfast we will drive you up to the top of Upcot Saddle so you can enjoy a mainly downhill ride of 10kms to Castle Creek where we take a break. Then enjoy the picturesque cycle ride to the start of Molesworth Station for lunch. We will let you ride all the best downhill sections, a 10km afternoon ride along the Acheron River followed by a ride into Hanmer Springs for a hot pool soak. We arrive in Hanmer Springs at about 5.30pm. Time to relax in the thermal pools before dinner at a local restaurant B.L.D
Approx. 40km cycle ride
Departing Hanmer Springs in your support vehicle we drive westward to the Lewis Pass saddle to start your ride on the Maruia trail an off road 40km ride to Murchison through native bush. A good variety of safe biking today with overnight accommodation in St Arnaud. B.L.D
Approx. 33 - 47km ride
Drive from St Arnaud to the Tasman district to the start of the Spooners Tunnel cycleway. Enjoy a gentle downhill run through the 1.4km tunnel before riding through the small township of Belgrove, take a break over a cuppa then bike onto to Wai-iti. We will have a lunch break at small township of Brightwater before re-joining the trail to ride to Monaco in outer Nelson. Enjoy a celebration drink before returning by bus to Blenheim by 5.30pm. B.L

Accommodation on tour
First night is staying in premium shearers accommodation on a high country station in the Awatere Valley, individual bedrooms sleeping two people. The second night is at motels in Hanmer Springs, all with ensuite rooms, situated approximately 100 metres across the road from the thermal pool complex. The third night is in St Arnaud, private rooms.

If you are bringing your own mountain bikes, good tyres are recommended, shock absorbers are not essential, but will make the trip more comfortable. Make sure it is in good condition and has been recently serviced and you have a spare inner tube. We can arrange bike hire for you.

You will need a moderate level of fitness with some off road experience biking on shingle surfaces.
When does the tour start and finish?
The tour starts at 8.00am from Blenheim so we recommend spending the night before your tour in Blenheim. The tour returns to Blenheim approximately 5.30pm on day four.
We will have plenty of storage space but we urge you to keep your luggage to a minimum. Please limit yourself to 18 kgs; two smaller bags are better than one large heavy bag. Travel packs, sports bags or soft sided suitcases are the easiest way to store and access your luggage.
